DST vs PES: Which Embroidery Format Does Your Machine Need?
A plain-English guide to the most common embroidery file formats and which machines read them.
Embroidery machines don't read images — they read stitch instructions. Each brand speaks a slightly different language, which is why formats matter.
DST — the industry standard
Tajima's DST is the most widely supported commercial format. It stores stitches and colour changes but not the actual thread colours, so your operator assigns colours at the machine.
PES — the home & semi-pro favourite
Brother and Babylock machines use PES. It stores thread colours too, so designs show up with the right colours on screen.
The easy answer
Not sure? Every Fatrix order includes DST, PES, EMB, EXP, JEF and XXX — so whatever machine you run, you're covered.
